The question is: Are this Peter Smith and Peter Thacher Smith one and the same? According to Royal Ancestors 3, p. 278, this Peter and Peter Thatcher Smith, the son of Rev. Thomas and Sarah (Tyng) Smith, have the same birth date. The Bulkeley Genealogy has Peter Thatcher Smith's family defined on page 442, one wife, Elizabeth Wendell. The Glover Genealogy also has Peter Thacher Smith's family, p. 135-136, and gives him an additional wife later. So why not a 3rd earlier? Since this Peter's children were all born prior to Peter Thatcher Smith's marriage to Elizabeth Wendell, perhaps Sarah Appleton and Peter Smith divorced? Peter T. was in his 30s when he married Elizabeth, kind of late to be married the first time. Sarah died as the widow of Peter Smith, according to her headstone, but this really doesn't say much. Peter and Sarah's children were all baptized in Boston, where Peter Thacher Smith married his wife Elizabeth in 1765 as well as his wife Jane in 1801.
He settled early at Vinalhaven, but after a few years, moved away and nothing was ever heard from him again. Many of the original settlers of Vinalhaven originated from the Falmouth area - the place of Peter Thacher Smith's supposed birth. | Smith, Peter (I9419)

The record of the trial of Seba Beebe is one of the rare documents found on microfilm at the Vermont State Library, Montpelier, VT, being a record of the Vermont State Supreme Court Session of February 8, 1795 at Windsor County Court at Woodstock, VT. Before a jury drawn from Windsor County, Seba Beebe, identified as of Strafford in the County of Orange, VT, pleaded not guilty to a charge of counterfeiting 100 so-called Spanish dollars of base metal and paying to one Benjamin Burtch(?) and Seth Hathaway two counterfeit Spanish dollars contrary to "the stature in that case made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the State." The date of the offense is given as May 7, 1794. On a four-count indictment, Seba was found not guilty on two counts and guilty on the other two. The Court thereupon sentenced Seba to "be taken to some proper place in the Town of Windsor between the hours of one and three in the afternoon on the 25th day of February instant and there have his right ear cut off, branded with the letter C on a hot iron on his forehead, and that he pay a fine of five pounds to the Treasurer of this State and costs of prosecution taxed at nineteen pounds, nineteen shillings, and six pense, and be committed to the (jail) in the County of Orange until the whole sentence be complied with."
This harsh penalty for passing "$2 worth" of counterfeit money was consistent with the laws of Vermont at that time for horse thiefs and counterfeiters. The law was changed in 1797 to eliminate mutilation and impose a jail sentence (ten years at hard labor for counterfeiting, seven years for horse theft, two to ten years for passing forged notes, and punishment for theft ranging from two to ten years depending upon the amount of money involved.
