      Honoured Sr.

      As a subject to the united states of America & Origanlly from Marblehead in the Province of Massachusets, have a wife & four children, induces me to Sollicit your Excellency on this present Occasion, imploring your protection in my unhappy situaition, having been taken by the fate of War by the ambuscade frigate & carried to Hallifax were I made my escape with some others, But meeting with the Visisitudes of fortune in endeavouring to get to my family but to no Effect, was unluckily on Board a Ship Bound to Barcelonia as chief Mate but to be Dismissed the first oppurtunity that presented to my View, But of Alicant unluckily was taken by a privateer of Marselles & brought to this Port, have made application of the above to the commissary but Was advised to Address you of the above narrative, hoping by your Excellencies distinguished & Extensive, Character & Power, will be Pleased to Mediate for my Releasement.

      Should be Exceeding happy to be on Board any of our Cruizers if any in france, or Otheways As Your Goodness shall think most Expedient, Have Been in the Character of Master of a Vessell, these ten Years past out of Piscataqua in the province of New Hampshire, Your compliance with the above & a Line by order of your Excellency Will be Gratefully Acknowled by Sr. With profound Respect Yr. Very Humble Servant

      Your Petitioner, as a Subject to the United States, and Originally from Marblehead in the province of Massachusets, begs Leave to Sollicit Your Excellency on this present Occasion being in Toulon at Large, conditionally to Go on Board a french Man of War, but there being none at present bound to America where my Natural inclination Leads me, having a Wife and four children begs Your Honour by Your Extencive Power and Interest to Procure my freedom that I might Sicure a pass to proceed in the best Manner possible to my family, your Excellencys compliance with the Above, Your Petitioner will be allways in Duty Bound and Will Ever Pray. from Sir With Profound Respect Your Excellencies most Obedient and Humble Petitioner

      My Last not being so Agreeable and legible to a person of your Dignity has I could wish for, Oweing to my Embarassed situation of Life, Begs Leave to Address Your Honour hoping I Shall not incurr Your Displeasure by a Multiplicity of writing, having Omitted in my Last to Mention, my not understanding french nor Speaking it, I Should not be capable of carrying command nor Obeying it. Therefore Your Excellency's interest to procoure my freedom in this Distressed time to inable me to proceed to my family, Shall be Gratefully Accknowledged by Your humble Petitioner

      Being now a Prisoner at this Place & on My Peroole of Honour, begs leave to address your Excellency on this present occasion, As Being a Subject to the United & Independent States of America, Sollicits your Honour to Use your interest & influence to Procure my Enlargement & Liberty As there being but two Unhappy Sufferers of Us natives of America puts Great confidence in our being Successful Having received a Letter lately from Bourdeaux from Mr. Frasier Directed to My fellow Sufferer Mr. Taylor in which he intimates the nessesity of our Accquainting Your Excellency of the above. Anxious Waiting for your approbation hoping Yr. Excellency Will take our Distressed situation in consideration Which Will be Gratefully Acknowledged by Sr. With Profound Respect Your most Obedient & humble Servant
