    • When he moved to Landaff he cleared the land of his farm and built a log house, in which he lived several years. It is related that he raised grain and grass, and that it was his custom each winter to take a load to Portland with an ox team, and bring home a year's supply of groceries. A great snow storm detained him on one trip, and several days passed before he could reach home. His wife, a large, robust woman, getting out of fuel, cut down large birches into fire wood.
