John Garrett
was born in 1615 in London, Middlesex,
England. He emigrated in 1635 from
England. He came to Virginia indentured
to John Dunston, a Puritan from the same London Parish. After completing his
four year indenture, John returned to London, and, after a short period, sailed
back to Virginia along with two brothers, Thomas and William. He received
a land grant of 150 acres in Nov 1640 in New Norfolk Co., Virginia.
He was granted an additional 400 acres on 22 May 1642.
This property joined his original patented
land, located on 'Indian Creek, a branch of the Western branch of Nansemond River.'
Indian Creek is now a part of Lake Prince near Suffolk, Virginia. He died about
1670 and his
estate escheated to the Colony on 6 Apr 1671.
John's 400 acres including the mill was granted to one Edward Isan and
became known as Isan's Mill. It is not known whether any of his surviving family
remained on his original 150 acres grant. John built a mill on Indian Creek and operated it for over 25
years until his death about 1670.
