There are some questions as to the origin of the surname.
I'll list the ones I've found.
- Old English - bar
(defense) and ton (town) to signify the "defense" or "defender of the
town". This appears to be the preferred definition. Many early
surname definitions I've found seem to follow this same construction
logic.
- Old English - bere (barley) and tun (enclosure) meaning "the
barley enclosure".
- Czech - related to Bartlam
which is an English variation of Bartholomew. Bartholomew is from the medieval
given name from Aramaic bar-Talmay (son of Talmay) whose name meant 'having many
furrows' in the sense of having much land.
