William Barton
was born between
1631 and 1638. He appeared on the census in 1686 in Cape Porpus, Maine
Colony.
He was a surveyor in 1689.
He died before 15 Apr 1700.
In 1681 William received
one hundred acres, lying between the great and little marshes, near the Cape
Porpoise river. He also bought one hundred acres from his brother in law John
Purrington, who received it as a grant from the town of Cape Porpoise. The latter
tract William Barton sold in 1672 to Thomas Kemble and Thomas Beers of Boston;
and the deed was witnessed by Elisha Barton, but it was not recorded until 1749.
This tract of land descended from Thomas Kemble, a merchant of Boston, to his
daughter, Sarah Knight. In 1686 William Barton petitioned, with others, to have
the public records continued at York; and in 1689 he was on of those appointed
for the surveying and laying-out of lots of land. Repeated Indian troubles continued
to drive the Bartons from Cape Porpoise. In 1720 the town of Arundel, formerly
Cape Porpoise, regranted to John Barton and Ebenezer Barton, sons of William
Barton, all their father's rights in the lands and marshes on the Cape Porpoise
River. It is supposed that by 1730 remaining Bartons had sold the last of their
lands and had left Cape Porpoise (Arundel). In the early land records mention
is made of Barton's Creek, Barton's Cove, Barton's Neck, and Barton's Further
Neck, also called Easter Neck.

He was married to Anne Green on 24 Oct 1673.

when she died. She died on 18 Oct 1736 in West Newbury, Essex Co.,
Massachusetts.

1724.
iv.
Susannah Barton . Anne
Green married 2nd, Walter Penwell (son of Walter Pennell and Mary
Booth) on 15 April 1700 in Newbury,
Essex Co., Massachusetts. Walter Penwell
was born on 1 December 1649 in Saco,
York Co.,
Province of Maine, Massachusetts.
He died before August 1730,
Savage says after 1719. He
was a weaver. He was also known as Walter Penuel and
as Walter Pennell.
Walter and Anne were "cautioned " on several occasions - in court in
1686. Recent DNA tests have pointed out significant differences in the genetic
markers of descendants of Ebenezer versus other descendants of Edward. This
opens up the possibility of an inconsistency in the paternity of Ebenezer - he
may actually be a child of Walter Pennell's. Currently we working to find
descendants of Walter Pennell in order to clarify this paternity. Walter's
ancestry can be found here. |
